About the museum
The Museo civico archeologico di Bisceglie, named after Francesco Saverio Majellaro, is housed in the former monastery of Santa Croce, in the centre of the town. It mainly holds finds from the Bisceglie area, in particular from the Santa Croce cave and the Neolithic village of Cave Mastrodonato, to which are added some material from private collections or from distant areas.
The route is divided into three sections: a prehistoric one, one from the Romanesque period, and one from the end of the Romanesque period to the present day. The prehistoric section displays Palaeolithic and Mousterian stone tools, Neolithic pottery decorated by impression, incision and painting, flint and obsidian artefacts, bone objects, and remains of fauna and molluscs.
Among the best-known pieces are a fossilised mat about 7,500 years old, discovered during excavations at the Santa Croce caves in 1997, and a white marble cinerary urn of the 1st century AD with a funerary inscription. The Santa Croce caves are linked to the finding of the remains known as the “Uomo di Bisceglie” (Man of Bisceglie), a Neanderthal femur.
