About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Bisceglie was established in 1980 and is housed in the Palazzo Episcopale (Episcopal Palace) in Largo San Donato, next to the cathedral. The route includes the Sarnelli apartment and the picture gallery: the rooms were commissioned by Bishop Sarnelli as his own residence and that of his successors, and have decorated wooden ceilings dating from 1696. The picture gallery holds paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a Holy Family with the young Saint John from the Venetian school, the Coronation of the Virgin by Paolo De Matteis (1716) and the Mystery of the Epiphany by Giuseppe Castellano (1718).
The collection of votive jewellery, spread over five rooms, is devoted to women’s jewellery and dress from the mid-19th to the early 20th century: bourgeois and popular jewellery, bridal, sentimental and lucky-charm pieces, 19th-century dresses and fan chains, alongside some male votive offerings linked to wars and seafaring.
The section on the cathedral treasures occupies three rooms: one houses the Tesoro Capitolare (chapter treasury), with chalices, pyxes and crosses in gold and silver from the 15th to the 19th century and an illuminated 12th-century evangeliary in Beneventan script; the other two hold paintings and furnishings removed from the cathedral between 1965 and 1972 during restoration work to recover its Romanesque style.
