About the museum

The museum of the archdiocese of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie-Nazareth was wanted by Archbishop Giuseppe Carata, to provide an appropriate home for the stone and sculptural material from the demolitions carried out in the cathedral and in other churches of Trani.

In the central space and along the walls are displayed stone finds: fragments of the 6th-century early Christian basilica, elements of the medieval building (griffin heads attributed to Nicolò Pisano, porphyry columns, alabaster capitals), the 16th-century alterations with the altar of the Madonna delle Grazie, and the Baroque transformations.

The central display structure houses the chapter treasury, made up of sacred furnishings, worked silverware and cartegloria (ceremonial liturgical display panels). Among the most precious pieces is the 14th-century ivory altarpiece (altarolo), a gift from Charles of Anjou to the clergy of Trani after the burial of his son Philip in the cathedral. Four small rooms finally house the Lillo-Rapisardi archaeological collection, with materials from the 6th century BC to the 2nd century AD.
