About the museum
The Antica Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala was founded in the second half of the 16th century beside the church of the same name, in the Trastevere district, and is one of the oldest pharmacies in Rome. Originally only the community of Carmelite friars who ran it could use it; at the end of the 17th century it was opened to the public.
Until 1954 galenical remedies were prepared here. Afterwards the business moved to the convent cloister and, in the eighties, the pharmacy was sold to a private owner; it still operates as a pharmacy today. The historic rooms, which are believed to have remained unchanged since the 18th century, have recently reopened as a museum.
