About the museum
The Terme dell’Indirizzo are a small Roman bathing complex of the late imperial period, dating between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD. They stood in a commercial area not far from the port of the ancient city, in today’s Piazza Currò, in the quarter of the old fish market, a short distance from the Duomo and the Castello Ursino.
The name derives from the nearby church of Santa Maria dell’Indirizzo and the adjoining Carmelite convent, which, according to tradition, commemorate a 17th-century episode in which a light supposedly guided a ship in difficulty to a safe harbour. The remains, incorporated into the convent and long used as a storehouse, were recognised as baths in the 18th century by the Prince of Biscari, Ignazio Paternò Castello, and became fully visible again only in the 20th century.
The complex, which is small, preserves several rooms covered by vaults and domes. The route includes the changing room (apodyterium), the frigidarium, the tepidarium and the caldarium, a large octagonal hall topped by a dome, with basins and a small laconicum for sweating. The channels and systems for circulating hot water and air are still recognisable. After the restorations of the eighties and the works of 2011–2013, the site is now managed by the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico di Catania e della Valle dell’Aci.
