About the museum
The Torre Civica, also known as the Torre di Piazza, was erected around the middle of the 12th century on the remains of the ancient Porta Veronensis (1st century AD), along the Via Claudia Augusta, closely connected with the bishop's residence. Standing 45 metres tall, it overlooks Piazza Duomo, dominated by the Cathedral and adorned by the Fontana del Nettuno (Neptune Fountain).
The tower also served administrative purposes and, until the late 19th century, as a men's and women's prison. For centuries it was a point of reference for the citizens: its clock marked urban and secular time, and with its two bells, called “della renga” and “della rason”, it gathered the population or warned them of danger.
After restoration, the tower allows visitors to discover eight of its twelve levels, reached by a staircase of 156 steps. The opening and running of the guided tours are made possible by an agreement between the Comune di Trento, owner of the building, and the Museo Diocesano Tridentino. The ticket is not sold separately from the museum ticket.
