About the museum

The Palazzo Lodron archaeological area in Trento belongs to a southern quarter of the Roman city of Tridentum, founded in the second half of the 1st century BC. Excavations begun in 2000 during the restoration of the historic building have uncovered a large part of the city and provided new data on the urban layout, private houses and everyday economic activity. The stratigraphic sequence has remained intact from the end of the 1st century BC to the 6th–7th century AD.

Remains can be seen of the southern walls of the first Augustan-era circuit, with a tower converted into a gate and later walled up, and a stretch of the minor cardo, the paved north–south road with stone kerbs. Among the private buildings are commercial and productive structures, including a caupona (Roman tavern) with large circular pits for the barrels and a house with a probable kitchen and pantry, whose rooms were once heated by a hypocaust. There are also a second city wall of the 3rd century and a 6th–7th-century necropolis, which includes the tomb of a Gothic woman with rich grave goods and a seat latrine, described as unique in Trento.

The area was reopened to the public on 10 July 2024 after a long closure and is managed by the Ufficio beni archeologici of the Autonomous Province of Trento with the support of Volksbank. It is part of the itinerary of Roman Trento.
