About the museum
The site on Via Rosmini is one of the most interesting places uncovered in the centre of Trento. Discovered in 1954, it was investigated by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza alle antichità delle Venezie), which identified a Roman domus extra moenia, located outside the city walls. Two building units separated by a courtyard were excavated; in the eastern sector stood a room with a splendid polychrome mosaic floor depicting Orpheus charming the wild animals with his lyre.
The site was opened as a museum in 1966 with two covering volumes made of glass. It was inaugurated on 29 October that year, but a few days later it was damaged by the flood of 4 November and had to close. Restoration work was completed in 1982. In 1998 ownership and responsibility passed to the Autonomous Province of Trento, which closed the site because of the age of the building and launched a redevelopment project.
The project was approved in 2013 and work began in 2015, with new archaeological investigations that led to important and unexpected finds. The arrangement was completed in 2022 with a single volume covering the remains, and the area was reopened to the public in June 2023.
