Underground archaeological area beneath Piazza Cesare Battisti covering 1,700 m² of Roman Trento: walls, town gate, street, sewers, houses and mosaics.
Mosaics, frescoes, marble objects and furnishings from recent excavations, largely displayed for the first time, show how Roman Trento decorated public and private spaces. The route also includes the Villa romana di Orfeo.
About the museum
The Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas, known as the S.A.S.S., is the result of excavations carried out between 1990 and 2000 during the restoration and extension of the Teatro Sociale. Beneath the level of the modern city, about 1,700 square metres of ancient Tridentum, the city founded by the Romans on the banks of the Adige, have come to light.
The name recalls the “Sas”, the old city quarter partly demolished in the thirties of the 20th century to make way for Piazza Cesare Battisti. The route includes a long stretch of the eastern city walls, with a tower converted into a town gate in the imperial age, an extensive section of road paved with local red stone and, beneath the road, the channels of an intricate sewer network.
Parts of houses with domestic rooms, mosaic floors, rooms with underfloor heating, courtyards, a perfectly preserved well and the workshop of a glassmaker are also visible. The video “Dentro Trento” and a virtual reality experience reconstruct the appearance of the Roman city; the site also hosts educational activities, meetings, exhibitions and performances.
