About the museum
The Villa dei Sette Bassi stands on a hill between the fifth and sixth milestones of the via Latina, at the junction with via delle Capannelle, and is the second largest suburban villa of Rome after the Villa dei Quintili. The name derives from a medieval designation linked to Settimio Basso, prefect of Rome under Settimio Severo, probably the owner of the complex.
The complex was built in three connected phases, beginning in the reign of Antonino Pio. The residential parts, once decorated with polychrome marbles and mosaics, include brick rooms, reception halls and a bath quarter. Around a large garden in the shape of a hippodrome extend a long underground cryptoporticus, the productive area with agricultural zones, a small temple, an aqueduct and several cisterns.
Only part of the site has been investigated so far. Today the villa is managed by the Parco archeologico dell’Appia Antica, which has recently carried out conservation and safety works.
