About the museum
The “Jāņaskola” museum opened in 1968 and is dedicated to the life and work of the composer Emīls Dārziņš (1875–1910). As visitors walk through the school building, built in 1871, and listen to the stories of the memorial objects and to Dārziņš’s music, they can try to solve three riddles – the secrets of the artist’s life, death and art.
Next to the museum runs the Oliveretto trail, which leads into the world of the poet Jānis Sudrabkalns (1894–1975). As a child he lived in nearby Zeltakrogs and attended Jāņaskola; Piebalga remained a bright island of memories for him all his life.
