About the museum
The history of the village of Vēveri in Vecpiebalga goes back at least 400 years. It is first mentioned in 1601 in the documents of a Swedish government auditor as a single farm, and it appears on a map at the end of the 17th century. After the long peaceful period following the Great Northern War the population grew, and then the layout of the farmsteads and the arrangement of the buildings began to take shape as they are seen today.
When the novel “Mērnieku laiki” (The Time of the Land Surveyors) was published and local residents bought the land from the manor for their own property, Vēveri already had eight farms. In the agricultural census of 1928, about forty different types of buildings were recorded on the eight farms. This unique building landscape was discovered during a field expedition in the 1970s.
To preserve this complex of folk architecture in its characteristic landscape, the Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais brīvdabas muzejs set up a rural exhibition in Vēveri in the 1980s. Since then the village has been a branch of the museum, which can be visited free of charge; craft days and other events also take place there.
