About the museum
Kārlis Skalbe (1879–1945), known as the king of Latvian fairy tales, built and furnished the summer house “Saulrieti” himself. The Skalbe family spent 18 summers here, from 1926 to 1944. The house takes its name from the sunlit view: a large glass wall in the main room catches every sunset over the Vecpiebalga hills, and from the upper veranda there is a view of Lake Alaukste, Lake Taune and Lake Ine.
Life in the countryside gave the writer respite from the political bustle of Riga and returned him to the landscape of his childhood. Since 1987 “Saulrieti” has operated as a memorial museum, where the family rooms and personal objects can be seen. Nearby, at Vaktskalns, lies the grave of Kārlis, Lizete and Ilze Skalbe, designed as a boat with a sail.
