About the museum
Melānija Vanaga was born on 4 September 1905 at Kalna Sermuļi in Drabeši parish. After the Cēsu 1. ģimnāzija (Cēsis 1st Gymnasium) she began law studies at the university, but because of her membership of the student society “Dziesmuvara” and other “sins” she spent 16 years in exile in Siberia. In 1957 she was released and returned to Latvia.
In the museum you can watch a video film about Melānija Vanaga, look at handwritten books that have not been published anywhere else, see the writer's personal belongings and hear stories about them. One of the most unique items is the almost ten-metre-long genealogy scroll she made, which summarises the history of the family over fourteen generations back to 1600. Near the sacred stone (svētakmens) a Siberian dugout (Sibīrijas zemnīca) has been built – the only structure of this kind in Latvia.
