About the museum
Nine metres below ground, in the grounds of the Līgatne Rehabilitation Centre (Rehabilitācijas centrs “Līgatne”), is a fitted-out bunker of 2000 m², whose secrecy stamp was removed only in 2003. It was built in the 1980s for the political and state elite, to run the state in the event of nuclear war.
The bunker was an autonomous economic structure, with a diesel generator power station, a fuel store, air purification equipment with oxygen reserves, a water supply and sewage system based on the submarine principle, and a telecommunications unit with direct links to Moscow. All the original underground equipment has survived to the present day.
The exhibition shows plans, books, a map with historical collective farm names, materials of the CPSU (PSKP) congress, a Soviet canteen and Soviet-era paraphernalia. Visits take place on guided tours.
