About the museum
The village of Ziemupe was formed on the site of a former seabed. The creation of the Jūras māja (Sea House) began with the only old photograph in the villagers’ albums, in which young people pose by fishing boats drawn up on the shore (1939 and 1940). In the past almost every second or third house had its own fishing boat.
The Jūras māja is a house of local stories – about the fishing boats burned in the Soviet period, ships thrown up on the shore, refugee routes to Gotland and a boat that drifted back from Gotland. It also holds stories about the coastal nature, plants and sea creatures – the zobenzivi, the jūras zīle, fish and seals. The exhibition on the first floor is made up of objects that have stayed in the homes of Ziemupe’s residents and together form the history of the village.
