About the museum

The Pāvilosta Local History Museum is housed in the first brick building in Pāvilosta, built in 1879: the Loču māja (Pilots' House), which stands at the mouth of the Saka river on a strip of land between the river and the Baltic Sea. The museum's exhibitions show, visually and through documents, how the town grew from a fishing village into a popular tourist destination.

In the digital exhibition each “golden grain of sand” provides information on the development of Pāvilosta over a hundred years, from 1918 to 2018. In Soviet times Pāvilosta was a closed border zone, but its old traditional occupation, fishing, survived. Visitors wearing 3D glasses can put themselves in the role of a fisherman, fishing for lampreys in the Saka river or setting out for flounder fishing in the Baltic Sea. The exhibition “Saka–osta–Pāvilosta” (Saka – Port – Pāvilosta) explains the importance and development of the river and the port from the first settlements to the Second World War.
