About the museum
Vērgale has one of the most distinctive manor ensembles in Courland, built in the Empire style. The manor was built in the mid-18th century, but in 1837 Baron Ernests Frīdrihs fon Bērs rebuilt it as a hunting palace. The Vērgales pagasta muzejs was founded in 1992 and is housed in the former spirits distillery of the manor.
The museum preserves evidence of the history of its native village. In the exhibition “Vērgale laiku lokos” (Vērgale in the Circles of Time) visitors can see agricultural tools and household objects made in Vērgale, and weave a row into the shared floor runner on a loom. The open storage collection is on the ground floor, and regular thematic and art exhibitions are shown in the exhibition hall. Legends and stories can be learned about the unique mantle chimney.
