About the museum

The A. Astrausko ortopedijos amato muziejus is a private medical museum in Kaunas, operating at the central headquarters of the orthopaedic company “Pirmas žingsnis” (First Step). It was founded in 2008 thanks to the efforts of the orthopaedic technologist and businessman Algimantas Astrauskas, by converting the former canteen premises of the Kaunas fasteners factory. The museum is listed in the register of Lithuanian private museums, and its activity aims to introduce the public to the orthopaedic craft and its development.

The exhibition shows the evolution of medical equipment, instruments and prostheses – from a clumsy support to modern orthopaedic devices. One of the most striking exhibits is a wooden prosthesis more than a century old, resembling a “pirato koja” (pirate's leg), which was once part of the collection of the Rumšiškės Folk Life Museum. Also on display is a prosthesis that a man living in Jurbarkas wore for more than 60 years, as well as heavy iron braces found at a First World War soldiers' burial site in Panevėžys.

A distinguished place is held by the orthopaedic leg brace worn by the basketball player Arvydas Sabonis after his Achilles tendon injury of 1987, which in 1997 returned from the Lithuanian Sports Museum to its manufacturer.

The museum is also a teaching base for medical students and pupils: educational activities take place here, and material is being collected on the first prosthetists, manufacturers of orthopaedic devices and makers of orthopaedic footwear.
