About the museum

The Lietuvos medicinos ir farmacijos istorijos muziejus belongs to the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) and serves as its teaching base: lectures for students are given here and practical classes take place. The museum is located in the Old Town of Kaunas, on Rotušės aikštė (Town Hall Square).

The exhibition recreates a Lithuanian town pharmacy from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with an oficina (dispensing room), a koktorija (coctorium), a storeroom, a laboratory and a cellar. Pharmacy vessels and instruments are displayed here, together with a steam line for producing galenic preparations and a hydraulic press from the pharmacy laboratory of the Kaunas Red Cross Hospital.

The exhibition “Materia medica” is part of a historical museum that the Polish professor Janas Mušinskis created for teaching purposes at the Vilniaus Stepono Batoro universitetas (Stefan Batory University in Vilnius) in 1921–1939. Another exhibition introduces visitors to the old medicine of Lithuania, medicine in 1918–1940 and the history of higher medical education in Kaunas; it shows fragments of the consulting rooms of interwar doctors.
