About the museum
The museum “Atominis bunkeris” (Atomic Bunker) is located in a Soviet-era civil defence shelter about six metres underground in Vilijampolė, Kaunas. The shelter belonged to the Kaunas factory “Aidas” and was intended to protect people in the event of war or natural disasters: it had ventilation, heating, water and electricity supply systems, wastewater disposal and communication systems. Very few shelters built to such requirements have survived in Lithuania.
The museum opened on 6 February 2014. Its core is a private collection of Cold War technology comprising more than a thousand exhibits, many of which were obtained from private collectors and enthusiasts.
Visitors can see a large collection of gas masks and closed-cycle breathing apparatus (including gas masks for children and for horses), radiation meters, civil defence and medical equipment, generators, aviation security equipment, radio communication devices and telephones from several decades. A separate section is devoted to the “KGB šnipų muziejus” (KGB Spy Museum): it shows secret surveillance, eavesdropping, encryption and covert photography equipment used by the NKVD, the KGB and the special services of the militia.
