About the museum

The Adomo Mickevičiaus muziejus is located in the Old Town of Vilnius, at Bernardinų g. 11, an architectural monument of the 17th–18th centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century the house belonged to Tomas Žickis, a professor at Vilnius University. In 1822, having returned from Kaunas, Adomas Mickevičius lived on the first floor and completed the poem “Gražina” here.

In 1906 the Vilniaus mokslo draugija (Vilnius Scientific Society) decided to set up a museum to the poet in the building. The plan was realised in 1911 by the society's member Janas Obstas: he bought and repaired the house and set up the museum on the first floor. In 1930 the building was handed over to the Vilniaus Stepono Batoro universitetas (Stefan Batory University in Vilnius). The museum operated until the Second World War, and during the occupation it was looted. In 1955, marking the 100th anniversary of the poet's death, the room was restored according to Vladislovas Belza's painting “Kambarys, kuriame buvo parašyta Gražina” (The Room Where Gražina Was Written), and later the museum was handed over to the library of Vilnius University, to which it still belongs. The current exhibition has been on display since 1983.

The three rooms of the museum show the poet's table and chair, brought from Paris; the 1815 registration book of the students of Vilnius University; letters of the Philomaths to Mickiewicz; his first editions; sculptures, portraits and medals – more than 200 exhibits in all. In the Gothic cellars under the poet's room, renovated in 1997–1998, a Philomaths' hall has been opened, where seminars, conferences and book launches are held.
