About the museum
The public institution Žaislų muziejus was founded on 8 March 2010. It was created by the archaeologist Povilas Blaževičius and his wife, Indrė Jovaišaitė-Blaževičienė; it grew out of P. Blaževičius’s dissertation on toys and games in Lithuania in the 13th–17th centuries, based on archaeological data. It is the first educational centre in Lithuania for families devoted to the heritage of toys and games.
The museum is in the Old Town, near the Cathedral, in a house built at the end of the 17th century, where in the 18th century there were the living quarters of canon Antonovičius and a brewery. The exhibition area is about 150 m² and consists of several thematic exhibitions: the oldest Lithuanian toys, a journey to the Stone Age, the time 100 years ago and memories of the 20th century. At one time the museum can admit up to 60 visitors.
