About the museum
The Tado Ivanausko Obelynės sodyba-memorialinis muziejus is a natural and cultural space created by Professor Tadas Ivanauskas and his wife Honorata Paškauskaitė-Ivanauskienė. The Ivanauskas family acquired the plot in the 1920s and gradually turned it into a distinctive world: an orchard of European apple varieties was cultivated here, a dendrological park was laid out, and collections of berry bushes and fruit trees were gathered.
Since 2022 a memorial museum has been operating in the restored residential house, a country villa. The exhibition tells of the family's everyday life, the professor's scientific work and his ideas on nature conservation. A special value of the house is its interior, which preserves the spirit of interwar Kaunas modernism: authentic furniture and details in the Lithuanian Art Deco style; during research, wall polychromy with stylised tulips and plant and geometric friezes was uncovered and restored.
The heritage apple orchard contains more than 150 fruit trees, among them 22 historic apple varieties from Western Europe, as well as the variety “Vytis”, bred by Prof. T. Ivanauskas. The 4-hectare dendrological park has many rare trees and shrubs (about 250–300 species and forms), and in the park operates the Obelynė open-air gallery, which holds exhibitions outdoors.
