About the museum

The building has a long history: in 1888, through the efforts of the priest Wichmann (Vichmanas), a Catholic children’s shelter was set up here; in 1905 a new three-storey building was erected, in which about 60 children lived, mostly orphans from Samogitia. The shelter was run by German Elisabethan nuns, who left with the residents in the autumn of 1944.

From 1961 the building housed the children’s tuberculosis sanatorium “Eglutė”, which closed in 2004. The abandoned building was severely damaged by a fire in 2007; in 2011 it was returned to the Šilutės Šv. Kryžiaus katalikų parapija (Šilutė Holy Cross Catholic Parish), and in 2018 it was handed over to the Šilutė District Municipality. After renovation the Spiritual Culture Centre opened on 5 December 2022; it houses the exhibition of the church heritage of the Šilutė region.
