About the museum
The Šilutė (Šilokarčema) manor was established in 1721 during the administrative reforms carried out in Prussia. In 1889 it was bought by the landowner Hugo Šojus (Hugo Scheu) from Klaipėda, one of the best-known people of the Klaipėda region, who was active in the economic and cultural life of East Prussia. Noticing how quickly traditions and crafts were disappearing, he began to collect ethnographic material and folklore of the Klaipėda region in two rooms of the manor house. It was the first museum in the Klaipėda region.
During the Second World War the manor and the collections suffered greatly. In 1949 a regional history museum opened in Šilutė, and in 1990, after the restoration of independence, the Šilutės rajono savivaldybė (Šilutė district municipality) became its founder; branches were set up in Kintai, Bitėnai, Švėkšna, Žemaičių Naumiestis and Macikai. Since 2015 the museum has borne the name Šilutės Hugo Šojaus muziejus.
