About the museum
The Juozo Tumo-Vaižganto butas-muziejus (Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas Flat Museum) was set up in 1997 in an authentic way, according to archive photographs, because the writer had photographed all his rooms. In the four memorial rooms practical simplicity combines with aesthetics; Vaižgantas himself called the surroundings of his flat artistically priestly. He had a “gallery of inexpensive but select paintings”, and these paintings, as in those days, hang in all the rooms; there are also several sculptures.
Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas lived and worked in this flat for thirteen years. From its windows can be seen the Švč. Mergelės Marijos Ėmimo į dangų (Vytauto Didžiojo) bažnyčia (Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Vytautas the Great Church) – the oldest early Gothic monument in Kaunas. Vaižgantas was rector of this church for almost twelve years and looked after its reconstruction and repair. As the church had no vestry, all church business was handled in the petitioners’ room, so the popular, much-loved priest was constantly visited by guests and petitioners.
The museum is a branch of the Maironio lietuvių literatūros muziejus (Maironis Lithuanian Literature Museum). Visitors with hearing impairments can use an audio guide in sign language.
