About the museum
The Tautinės muzikos muziejus (Museum of Lithuanian National Music) began operating in 1985 as a department of the Lithuanian SSR Folk Life Museum, under the name Lietuvių tautinės muzikos instrumentų muziejus (Museum of Lithuanian National Music Instruments). In 1989 it separated from the Folk Life Museum, and in 1995 it was named after Povilas Stulga. Since 2013 the museum has been a branch of the Kaunas City Museum.
The museum is housed in a complex of several buildings around a small courtyard in the Old Town of Kaunas. The building at Kurpių g. 12 is a Gothic-style residential house built in the second half of the 16th century, while the building at L. Zamenhofo g. 12 was built in 1876. From 1985 to 2003 the “Tutučio” music school operated here.
The exhibition presents wind folk instruments, skudučiai (panpipes) and daudytės (traditional Lithuanian wind instruments), sutartinės (Lithuanian polyphonic songs), kanklės from different ethnographic regions, harmoniums, gramophones and accordion-type instruments. Many exhibits can be heard being played, and in the interactive space “Tradiciniai šokiai” (Traditional Dances) visitors can dance and play themselves.
