About the museum
Juozas Zikaras was a famous sculptor, made known by works dedicated to Lithuania's independence: the sculptures “Laisvė” (“Freedom”) and “Knygnešys” (“The Book Smuggler”), the monument to the “Nežinomam kareiviui” (“Unknown Soldier”), busts of Lithuanian public figures, and designs for Lithuanian coins. His house and works were preserved by his daughter, who left them to the M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejus (M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum).
The Juozo Zikaro namai-muziejus (Juozas Zikaras House Museum) opened in 2001, marking the 120th anniversary of the sculptor's birth. In 2021 the building underwent renovation. The museum consists of living rooms, the workshop and the house garden.
In the authentically furnished living room a linoleum floor from about 1935 and a piano from 1900 have survived; in the next room there is a dining room from 1933 with a restored gramophone. From the door of the father's room you enter the so-called Bučinių terasa (Terrace of Kisses), from which one of the most beautiful views of Kaunas opens. On the ground floor the Zikaras workshop is set up – a studio, a men's room and a gallery, where plaster moulds and drawings from school years are kept.
