About the museum
The Lietuvos aviacijos muziejus (Lithuanian Aviation Museum) was founded on 19 February 1990. Until 1 February 1995 it was called the Lithuanian Technology Museum. Its predecessor, the Visuomeninis sportinės aviacijos muziejus (Public Sports Aviation Museum), was started by Lithuanian aviators in 1971 and officially opened in 1983. The museum is located in Aleksotas, Kaunas, on the site of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas Airfield.
Since 1991 the museum's branches have included the restored birthplace farmsteads of the aviators Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas, where memorial exhibitions on the flight across the Atlantic are displayed. The collections hold more than 24 thousand exhibits, among them more than 50 flying machines; the specialised library holds about 19 thousand publications.
The museum's most popular exhibit is the flight-capable replica of the “Lituanica”, built in 1982 for the film “Skrydis per Atlantą” (Flight Across the Atlantic). The museum is also proud of Lithuanian gliders, the helicopter “Sidabrinis titanas” (Silver Titan) and drawings of the ANBO-IV aircraft, which are included in the Lithuanian national register of UNESCO's Memory of the World programme. On 1 April 2026 the museum reopened its doors after reconstruction, with a renewed exhibition.
