About the museum
The museum is named after the land of the ancient Semigallians, where it was the first and for a time the only museum. More than 6,000 exhibits have been gathered, mostly in the archaeology section: finds from the Žeimelis, Kairėliai and Diržiai cemeteries are displayed, along with flint and stone axes, spindle whorls, iron spearheads, grain querns and jewellery, including bracelets typical of the Semigallians. The museum also provides information about press distributors, and the exhibition hall shows work and household tools and agricultural implements.
An educational activity is offered, for example “Žiemgalių ornamentika” (Semigallian Ornamentation), during which participants get to know the ornaments and colours of the Semigallian land and create their own ornaments.
