About the museum
The Palangos gintaro muziejus (Palanga Amber Museum) was founded on 3 August 1963 and is a branch of the Lietuvos nacionalinio dailės muziejaus (Lithuanian National Museum of Art). It is housed in the palace of Count Feliks Tiškevičius (1865–1932), which was designed in 1897 by the German architect Franz Schwechten. The palace is surrounded by the Palanga Botanical Park, created by the French landscape architect Édouard André.
The permanent exhibition “Nuo gintaro susidarymo iki unikalių šiuolaikinių gintaro dirbinių” (“From the Formation of Amber to Unique Contemporary Amber Works”) occupies fifteen halls. It tells the story of how amber forms, how it is processed and used, and shows various amber shapes, a collection of about 15,000 inclusion objects, Neolithic finds from Šventoji and works made by the Palanga amber manufactory in the 19th century and the interwar period. On the first floor of the palace, unique amber collections are shown, and the historic rooms introduce the life of the Counts Tiškevičius in Palanga.
The museum is known for its traditional cultural events: for more than 30 summers, night serenade concerts have been held on the terrace, and meetings with artists take place in the fireplace hall. Thematic art exhibitions are held in the palace's former chapel.
