About the museum

The writer Martynas Vainilaitis homestead museum is in Vaitakarčmis village, Varėna district. Here the poet, spending his summers for almost three decades and drawing inspiration from the nature of the surroundings, wrote works for children. After the poet's death in 2006, the staff of the Varėna Public Library prepared the project “In the Land of Childhood: Establishing the Martynas Vainilaitis Museum and Sculpture Park in Vaitakarčmis Village”, in order to perpetuate his memory and encourage children to read.

At the homestead guests are greeted by sculptures and sculptural compositions on the motifs of the poet's works: dwarfs from “Snow White”, devils from “The Blacksmith's Tales”, a witch and the dwarf Adas from “The Owl's Song”. Wooden fairy-tale characters carved by folk master Adolfas Teresius – dwarfs, hedgehogs, pikes, wood spirits (giriniai) and fairies (laumės) – stand here. Children can swing on swings from “The Rainbow Weaver” and climb wooden steps into “The Hedgehog's Manor”. Every year the Alytus County children's art festival “Susitikimas ežio dvare” (Meeting at the Hedgehog's Manor) is held here.
