About the museum
The Perlojos istorijos muziejus is a branch of the Merkinė Region Museum, founded in 1998 on the initiative of Antanas Volungėnas. It collects, preserves, researches and exhibits the most valuable material and spiritual cultural heritage of Perloja's history. The museum is in the very centre of Perloja, next to the monument to Vytautas the Great and the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Francis of Assisi.
The exhibition presents the archaeological and historical past of Perloja: the development of the settlement in the times of the grand dukes and under tsarist rule, the famous Perloja Republic, and life in independent Lithuania. It shows how the people of Perloja survived the Second World War and the post-war period, and how a collective farm and an experimental farm were set up. Archaeological finds, old publications, photographs, works by local craftsmen, farm implements and household items are on display.
By prior arrangement, crafts can be learned: weaving fabrics and bedspreads, decorating Easter eggs with wax, and lacemaking. A two-hour tour, “Perlojos paslaptys: išgirsti ir pamatyti” (Secrets of Perloja: Hear and See), is offered; it visits the museum, the Vytautas the Great monument, the church and the graves of partisans buried in the churchyard.
