About the museum
The Sapiegų rūmai (Sapiega Palace) in the Antakalnis district of Vilnius were built in 1689–1692 on the order of Kazimieras Jonas Sapiega, Grand Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Voivode of Vilnius. The building was designed by the architect Giovanni Battista Frediani, the sculptures were made by Giovanni Pietro Perti and the frescoes were painted by Michelangelo Palloni. The palace was part of the Sapiega suburban residence; nearby have survived a French-style park, the Trinitorių vienuolynas (Trinitarian monastery) and the Jėzaus Išganytojo bažnyčia (Church of Jesus the Saviour).
Later the Sapiega palace was used for other purposes for many years: in the 19th century it housed a hospital and an eye clinic, and in the Soviet era a school of radio technology for anti-aircraft defence. After Lithuania regained its independence, archaeological and architectural research was carried out; the palace was later restored and adapted for visitors.
In spring 2024 the palace opened its doors as a branch of the Šiuolaikinio meno centras (Contemporary Art Centre). Tours on the history, architecture and restoration of the palace, exhibitions, concerts, events and educational programmes for families and pupils take place here.
