About the museum
The National Visitor Centre is located in Antakalnis, in the historic building of the Sapiegų rūmų (Sapiega Palace) complex. It invites visitors to discover Lithuania's protected areas – from ancient forests to open meadows and bogs – and explains what is worth protecting and why nature conservation matters. The centre is run by the Valstybinė saugomų teritorijų tarnyba (State Service for Protected Areas).
The modern, picturesque exhibition gives visitors the feeling of being immersed in nature: birds fly overhead, grasshoppers chirp, clouds drift by. Interactive elements, including a gear-wheel diagram of the protected areas system and a laboratory table with nature puzzles, encourage learning through experience. National and regional parks, reserves and natural heritage sites are presented here, while in the cinema hall visitors can take a virtual journey through the nocturnal natural world, where bats come to life.
