About the museum

The Tuskulėnai manor, begun in the 16th century, had royal status, and until the middle of the 19th century its particularly splendid manor house was one of the cultural centres of Vilnius. In 1944–1947 people shot in the NKGB (MGB) internal prison were secretly buried on the manor grounds, so this place bears witness to the cruelty of the Soviet occupiers. Today the memorial complex is a branch of the Okupacijų ir laisvės kovų muziejus (Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights), which belongs to the Lietuvos gyventojų genocido ir rezistencijos tyrimo centras (Lithuanian Genocide and Resistance Research Centre).

In the complex visitors can see the chapel-columbarium – the resting place of the victims of the Soviet totalitarian regime – the Tuskulėnų rimties parkas (Tuskulėnai Rest Park), the manor house with its oficina (office wing), the Baltasis dvarelis (White Manor) and the Šv. Teresės koplytėlė (Chapel of St Teresa). In the manor house the museum exhibition “Projektas – HOMO SOVIETICUS” shows how the Soviet regime sought to create a new social, cultural and political environment. In the White Manor a 17th-century brick kiln has survived, in which bricks were made for the construction of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul; in the basement is the exhibition “Tuskulėnų dvaro paslaptys”.
