About the museum
The Trakų istorijos muziejus was founded on 28 July 1948 as the Trakai Regional Studies Museum and has been called the Trakų istorijos muziejus since 1965. In its first decades it operated in the former building of the Karaimų muziejus (Karaim Museum), carried out archaeological research and ethnographic expeditions, and its collections included material from the excavations of Trakai Island Castle. In 1961 the central palace of the Island Castle was handed over to the museum for restoration, and in 1962 the first exhibition was opened in the castle.
In the central palace an exhibition has been running since 1962, reflecting the history of the town of Trakai, its castles and the Trakai land. In the western casemates of the Island Castle, 16 halls have been set up since 1992, where the museum's applied art collections are shown: furniture, pipes, prints, clocks, porcelain and glassware and hunting trophies. The museum's collections also include archaeological material from the surroundings of Trakai.
The Trakų istorijos muziejus also has other places worth visiting: the Peninsula Castle with a sacred art exhibition in the Dominican chapel, the Medininkai Castle and the S. Šapšalo karaimų tautos muziejus (S. Šapšalas Karaim Folk Museum).
