About the museum
From the early 16th century the peninsula between Lakes Galvė and Skaistis belonged to Tatar nobles. It was later held by the Seliava family, by Dominykas Karolis Karpis, a canon of the Vilnius Cathedral, and by Laurynas Odinecas, who built a brick Uniate chapel here. In the mid-19th century the estate passed to the Korevos family, and in 1867 it was acquired by Count Juozapas Tiškevičius (1830–1891).
The count’s son Juozapas Tiškevičius (1868–1917), together with his wife, Princess Jadvyga Sviatopolk-Četvertinska, created the manor ensemble that survives to this day at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. To a design by the Polish architect Juzef Hussa, a palace resembling a suburban villa, with white Louis XVI-style interiors, rose on the shore of Lake Galvė in 1897–1901. The French landscape architect Édouard François André designed the regular parterres and the surrounding landscape park. In 1901 Užutrakis was declared an entailed estate (ordinacija), and in 1902–1921 it was the residence of the Tiškevičius family.
When the First World War broke out, the family left the estate, which was later managed by the count’s eldest son, Andrius. During the Nazi occupation, from August 1941, a Jewish labour camp operated on the estate. In Soviet times the manor was nationalised and used as a KGB holiday villa, a Pioneer camp and a tourist base (until 1991). In 1995 the estate was transferred to the Trakai Historical National Park Directorate, on whose initiative most of the buildings were restored and the historic park is maintained.
