Lietuvos kelių muziejus

The Lietuvos kelių muziejus (Lithuanian Road Museum) in Vievis tells the story of road building, the work of road builders and road maintenance technology.

About the museum

The Lietuvos kelių muziejus opened on 19 October 1995 in Vievis. After the restoration of independence and the establishment of the Lithuanian Motor Roads Directorate, road builders set about realising an old idea: to collect and display material on the history of Lithuanian roads. The museum's first director was Juozas Stepankevičius; from 2017 the museum was headed by Erika Švermickienė, and since 2024 the director has been Rimantas Zagrebajev. The museum belongs to AB “Kelių priežiūra” (Road Maintenance) and to the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania.

Over more than three decades the exhibition has been continuously expanded, and it now occupies two floors of the building, while heavy road-building and maintenance machinery is displayed in a separate hangar and outdoors. The museum holds more than 8,000 exhibits: old maps of Lithuania, photo albums, the first books on road construction, models of bridges and viaducts, road signs and the oldest road-building and maintenance tools. One of the most valuable exhibits is a horse-drawn bitumen boiler made in Germany in 1854. Many exhibits were donated to the museum by road builders themselves.

Visitors can try a road maintenance work simulator and an augmented reality mirror. The museum offers guided tours and educational programmes for children and adults, as well as remote educational sessions under the Culture Passport (Kultūros pasas) programme. A fresco with a map of the town of Vievis, created by Timotiejus Norvila (Morfai), appeared on the wall of the building in 2025. The museum's premises are also rented out for events, and in future the museum plans to renew the exhibition and set up a modern technical and educational centre.
