About the museum
The Idėjų observatorija (Ideas Observatory) is located in the historic observatory complex on M. K. Čiurlionio gatvė; since 2021 it has been curated by the Vilniaus universiteto muziejus. It is a space for education, leisure and science communication, where activities in the exact, natural, social and humanities sciences are organised for small groups, with great emphasis on the synthesis of art and science.
The astronomical observatory was founded in the city centre in 1753 and operated until 1883. In 1919–1921 Vladislovas Dziewulskis began building a new observatory on what was then the outskirts of Vilnius. In the first, temporary wooden pavilion, under a dome five metres in diameter, a Carl Zeiss telescope was installed. In 1927 Wilhelmina Iwanowska, the first woman to defend a doctoral dissertation in astronomy in Poland, began her career here. Later Vytautas Straižys and Kazimieras Zdanavičius developed the Vilnius seven-colour photometric system for the classification of stars.
The exhibition “Observatorijų ir mokslininkų istorijos” (History of Observatories and Scientists) tells the story of this science and of the people behind it.
