About the museum
The MO museum was founded on the personal initiative of the scientists Danguolė and Viktoras Butkai. For almost a decade it operated as a museum without walls, and since 18 October 2018 it has had its own building in Vilnius, on Pylimo gatvė. The building was designed by the architect Danielis Libeskindas in collaboration with the Lithuanian office Do Architects; it is the first project of “Studio Libeskind” in the Baltic states. The museum rises at the junction of the Old Town and the New Town of Vilnius, and beside it is a sculpture garden with a terrace, open to residents and visitors.
The museum's collection consists of about 6,000 works of Lithuanian modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present day. Its core is made up of collections of painting, graphic art, photography and video art, supplemented by a smaller collection of sculpture and interdisciplinary art. The Butkai couple began collecting in 2008, and since 2011 the collection has had the status of national significance. It also includes art that was ideologically unacceptable in the Soviet Union, as well as the generation of creators who entered the art scene after the restoration of independence.
The museum organises two major exhibitions a year, in autumn and spring, while the exhibitions in the small hall change more often. Besides exhibitions, there is a cinema, educational sessions, concerts, a reading room with more than 3,000 books, a shop and the “MO bistro”. In 2025 the museum was visited by almost 149 thousand people.
