About the museum
The museum of the famous 19th-century poet and pioneer of tourism in his native region, Vladislavas Sirokomlė, is located in a wooden manor house in the village of Bareikiškės, only 14 km from Vilnius. The poet rented the building, which belonged to Count Benediktas Tiškevičius, together with his family, and lived here for eight particularly creative years. Friends from Vilnius visited the manor, among them the composer S. Moniuška, writers and publishers, the archaeologist E. Tiškevičius and the painter V. Dmochovskis.
In the mid-20th century a school operated on the estate, which before the war had been named after Sirokomlė, and later it was a library. In 1973, marking the poet’s 150th birth anniversary, his study became a memorial museum. The museum now occupies three rooms in the right wing of the building, where the poet lived with his family: the first displays furniture that the museum received in 1966 after the death of the poet’s granddaughter; the second has been recreated as his work room, and his books are also on show, including a ten-volume collection of his works published in Warsaw in 1872.
In the estate courtyard stands a table made from a millstone, on which Sirokomlė wrote his works, and in memory of the poet a black granite table with a carved lyre was erected in 1897. The poet’s best-known works were written in Bareikiškės, among them the historical poem “Margiris”. The museum hosts pottery, calligraphy and other educational activities, and an annual poetry and music festival, “Sirokomlės lyra”, takes place outdoors. The Vilniaus rajono turizmo informacijos centras (Vilnius district tourist information centre) is also located here.
