About the museum
The Lietuvos meno pažinimo centras TARTLE (Lithuanian Art Discovery Centre TARTLE) in Vilnius’s Užupis opened on 30 August 2018. It was founded by the public institution “Lietuvos dailės fondas” (Lithuanian Art Foundation) and the collector Rolandas Valiūnas. The aim of the centre is to gather the Lithuanian cultural and historical heritage scattered around the world, bring it back to Lithuania and make it accessible to the public.
The centre’s collection consists of more than 8,000 exhibits: about 1,000 paintings, over 360 sculptures, over 490 maps, over 1,100 works of historical graphic art and more than 2,000 Lithuanian books and printed items published before 1905. Visitors can see original works from different epochs – from the heritage of pagan times to contemporary art. The exhibitions are changed under the curation of art historians; at present the exhibition “Migruojantys menininkai” (Migrating Artists) is on, about Lithuanian artists who worked abroad in the 20th century.
The centre can be visited independently or with an art historian as a guide; small groups of up to 12 people are admitted to the exhibition.
