About the museum

The Beckerich mill is first mentioned in writing in 1328, when John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg, gave it to the Clairefontaine Abbey. After the French Revolution it was auctioned in 1797 and passed into private ownership. Thanks to the energy generated by the mill, Beckerich became one of the first villages in Luxembourg to have electricity, in 1913. After the death of the last miller, Jos Waxweiler, in 1978, the mill was abandoned; in 1996 the municipality bought the site back. Former mayor Camille Gira (1990–2013) championed its restoration.

In 2004 the association Kulturmillen was founded; it runs the mill as a cultural centre with events, exhibitions, courses and guided tours, and the complex was inaugurated in 2011. In 2024 the Energiemusée opened on the site, replacing the former “Musée des anciens métiers”. It shows in a modern, interactive way how energy used to be produced and used in the municipality of Beckerich, and how the municipality now relies on renewable energy.

The museum is free to visit every day from 9:00 to 21:00: individual visitors register online with their phone number and receive an access code that unlocks the door for five minutes. It can be combined with the “Energie Tour” through the municipality.
