About the museum
Michel Lucius was born in Reimberg in 1876 into a working-class family. His father worked in the Mertzig quarry, which introduced the son to geology at an early age. He trained as a teacher, studied in Paris and Zurich and earned his doctorate; he later worked for an oil company in Russia and, from 1924 to 1933, was chief geologist at the Turkish Ministry of Economy.
The state bought the birthplace in 1993. The Institut géologique Michel Lucius renovated it together with the national heritage authorities and the municipality of Préizerdaul; the opening took place on September 22, 2005. Besides serving as a museum, the institute uses the house for lectures and geological excursions.
The museum presents Lucius’s life and research over two floors. Visitors also learn what a geologist does, how to read a geological map and which rocks occur in the surroundings.
