About the museum
The Musée Rural et Artisanal is located in Peppange, on a large farm whose residence was built in 1840; the barn and stables followed in 1842. The farm was worked across several generations by the builder’s family and later by tenant farmers, until the last heirs sold it to the Luxembourg State in 1989. The culture minister of the time wanted to use the estate for cultural purposes, and the same year it was placed under national heritage protection.
The museum opened in 1999. It shows rural life of past centuries: a furnished house with a bread oven that is still in use, stables, a barn, machine rooms and numerous craft workshops. The farm implements, arranged by themes such as plowing, sowing and harvesting, have been restored, and some are still operational. The courtyard also has a farm garden with vegetables, spices and medicinal plants.
A special focus is on iron working: the museum runs a village forge and a reconstructed medieval forge. These are based on excavations of a medieval ironworks in the Genoeserbusch near Peppange, which have been studied since 2002 together with the University of Münster and the National Museum. Across the way, in the house “A Mëchels,” an exhibition on early metallurgy displays oven plates, anvils and furnaces.
