About the museum
The Ġgantija complex is a late Neolithic monument on the Xagħra plateau in Gozo, built between 3800 and 2000 BC. It consists of two temple structures with separate entrances, both enclosed by a shared outer wall of large megaliths. Each structure has several apses on either side of a central corridor.
Most of the monument is built of coralline limestone, while the softer globigerina limestone was used for inner features such as doorways, altars and decorated slabs. Two plaster fragments with red ochre, displayed in the interpretation centre, suggest that the interior walls were once painted.
Visitors enter through the interpretation centre, which presents audiovisual material and a display of Neolithic objects from Gozo.
