About the museum

Ta’ Kola Windmill is one of the few surviving windmills of the Knights’ period on the Maltese Islands. The first windmill in Xagħra was built in 1725 with funds from the foundation of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena, but poor construction forced its demolition. The present mill was built in 1787 on a different site.

Like most Maltese windmills of its time it consists of rooms on two floors around a central cylindrical stone tower. The tower contains the wooden milling mechanism with the original circular grinding stones. For the villagers the mill was, together with the parish church, one of the focal points of village life, since it supplied the flour for bread, the staple food of the time.

The objects in the workshop belonged to the last miller who lived here and were used to run and maintain the mill. On the first floor rooms furnished with simple rural furniture recreate the home of the miller’s family, a common arrangement during the Knights’ and British periods. The items on display each stand for a trade, tradition or piece of local folklore.
