About the museum
The Gozo Nature Museum stands in the Ċittadella, the fortified old town of Victoria. It presents the natural heritage of the island, with an audio-visual experience about the terrestrial Natura 2000 sites of Gozo and the fragile habitats that shelter endemic plants and animals. Further displays introduce the seabird species that breed on Gozo, and a dedicated room looks at the Natura 2000 site of the Ċittadella itself, whose ecology supports rare plants and several species of bat.
Other exhibits show the many uses of local Globigerina limestone, for example through a model windmill built of the stone, and explain how stones formed in water differ from sedimentary ones. Preserved fish are on show as stuffed specimens. At the back of the building a small garden planted with typical garigue vegetation offers a close look at indigenous plants and views of the cathedral.
Since March 2026 parts of the building have been closed while Heritage Malta prepares the new Gozo Museum, which will tell the history of the island. The Natura 2000 displays on the upper floor, the recreational spaces and the garden remain open free of charge. Once the work is finished the building is planned to be used for Heritage Malta’s administration.
